OPAL Meeting Notes November 5, 2007
(Black: Nancy Steele; Red: Ruth Solie; Blue: Patricia Post)
Further Definition of the 23 Things initiative:
Scope:
- We will use blogs to track accountability There will be a “mother blog” for the project which will contain all the other blogs in addition to the information about each “Thing”. Each participant will create their blog to report on their progress. These individual blogs will be aggregated by multitype regions on the main blog’s bloglines.
- Organize by regions- as participants are most interested in what other local participants are doing.
- Create a spreadsheet to track progress Each multitype will track the participants from their region by reading the blogs.
- We agreed that all those who complete the 23 things,(within the designated time) and document it, will receive the same incentive; we will look for some kind of sponsor for the incentives and/or consider using our multitype fund. This is a statewide project and we want it to pretty much look and feel the same statewide. We wanted everyone to receive the same basic prize. There may be drawings for fancier prizes.
- People can continue beyond the 12 week period of time, but the incentives will apply to those who register and complete within the 12 weeks.
- This project will be open to participants from all types of libraries, to trustees and Board members, and to other interested parties (e.g., teachers) if they have an active relationship with their local library. The primary audience is library staff in all types of libraries.
- Require ??Recommend the participants add to their blog at least once a week. Designed to be a six-week program- end in April This will launch at MEMO Midwinter and will continue for 12 weeks (not 6), ending in late April. Exact dates to be set.
- Use California as basis but customize We are hoping that the participants will take their own time to explore. Ann W., Patricia and Aurora will work on this content. Those participating in this meeting should look at the California School Learning site to see if there are any items they would like to change. A MN section will be included somewhere in this list of 23 Things.
- Ann W. will have a content blog draft by the end of the week and solicit e-mail suggestions.
- All MT are to promote project and act as coaches, although additional coaches may be recruited There may be additional “launch” events in the regions after the MEMO Midwinter conference, but Midwinter, I think, will be the official launch of the project.
- Kick-off in the regions in January
- Keep State Library, MEMO and MLA informed - Seek endorsements, publicity and support We also talked about using WebJunction in some fashion and including Mary Ann Van Cura in the State Library agency updates.
Name the Initiative
“23 Things on a Stick A library Learning 2.0 Program” I understood that the title was “23 Things on a Stick” with a subtitle or tag line underneath of “A Library Learning 2.0 Program”.
Logo: possible Minnesota Shape and stick with the number 23
Tasks List:
- Write press release etc. after the program is developed. In addition to a press release suitable for newsletters, we talked about messages for email promotions, possible mailing piece, and website announcements. The creation of these pieces may happen alongside the development of content; using press releases and such from the California initiative.
- Develop a logo- Ann W to explore with MELSA
- Communicate with MEMO and MLA – Ann W. since they are in the same building
- Apply for MN Certification-Ruth will talk to Rebecca Patton about Voluntary Certification competencies and submit the necessary papers; Patricia is on the Voluntary Certification Oversight Committee. This will be done before the Nov 29th Voluntary Certification meeting.
- Set up 23 things blog and documentation Ann W. and Patricia; they will also look into Google Docs or starting a wiki as a way to track the development of different aspect of the project.
- Develop MEMO Midwinter presentation- later
- Incentives- check for “flash drives” or “sticks” to be branded or imprinted Patricia and Ruth
- Nancy to send notes of meeting Thanks!
- Follow-up OPAL meeting the week of November 18- Ruth to send Doodle with dates

OPAL Meeting Notes, November 19, 2007
Next Steps
-
Everyone drill through the blog content, make comments in appropriate areas. The content creation needs to happen first.
-
-
If lots of new content ideas, volunteers will be needed to write
-
Be thinking about who else to involve in the process
